The Higher Education Pathway Program (HELPP) is dual pronged. First, it is an invaluable resource and bridge between student preparation and gaining acceptance into quality education institutions around the world. One of the major deterrents for parents and students in the quest for entry into universities and colleges is navigating the complexities of information gathering, understanding and meeting entry requirements, preparing for and acquiring high international test scores, preparing appropriate documents, and managing communications with international student offices. HELPP takes the burden from parents and students, simplifies, and facilitates the admission process from start to finish.
HELPP goes even further, thanks to its innovative research background, to provide post acceptance acculturation and adaptation workshops and guidance to students prior to their departure. The program keeps in touch with the students, gathering information on their academic and social challenges/progress, and provides the institutions with information needed to help international students get the most out of their educational experience. The second focus of the HELPP is youth leadership and capacity development. Through a series of courses, seminars, research initiatives, retreats, and projects, HELPP works to instill youths with leadership and critical thinking skills and qualities needed if they are to thrive in the emerging global economy.
Of the many challenges that plague the education sector in Nigeria, one of the most important is the poor quality of teachers. This decline in teaching quality can be attributed to several factors that include the poor quality of teacher preparation programs, lack of investment in the professional development of teachers, lack of access to training opportunities, and initiatives that are not designed to be sustainable. With this in mind, the need for a comprehensive strategy that will help the sliding standards across all tiers of the Nigerian educational system is extremely paramount. Therefore, any strategy for improving education standards must have as its cornerstone, the improvement of the quality of teachers and hence teacher training in Nigeria.
