INSTEP-Recommended Basic Teacher Training Program

INSTEP-Recommended Basic Teacher Training Program (I-REBATT) is an innovative approach to teacher development aimed at not only raising the quality of teaching in the public schools but more importantly, introducing a model that addresses the global challenge of sustainability. It is the first model of its kind and can pave the way for Nigeria as a pioneer for other developing countries.

The main goal of I-REBATT is to provide professional development to public school teachers that is both continuous and long-term. The objectives are to:

Train at least 5 teachers in each public school to become trainers

Increase and update the knowledge base of at least 1,000,000 teachers nationwide and train them on effective teaching practices and modern teaching methodologies. The first phase of the project has begun and is targeting 21,000 public school teachers in the FCT

Provide the resources (Teacher Trainer Manual, Teacher Resource Pack, and Training Register) for continuous training and development of public-school teachers across the nation

Impact the learning and academic performance of students in public schools through higher quality teaching

Provide a system that enables monitoring and evaluation

Provide teacher development that meets global standards

Increase teacher proficiency in digital literacy and incorporation of technology into everyday teaching and learning

The I-REBATT program is guaranteed to translate to the classroom thus raising the quality of learning for students across the country.

I-REBATT ROLL-OUT

Intergraid is working in collaboration with the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB) to deliver I-REBATT to all the public secondary school teachers across the Capital city of Nigeria. There are six Local Government Districts: Bwari, Kwali, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Municipal. The FCT phase 1 began in July 2022 with Abaji district. 63 teacher trainers from 16 secondary schools attended the I-REBATT training session. Also in attendance were 20 members of the FCT SEB monitoring and evaluation team.

After the training, each Teacher Trainer was given I-REBATT teacher training resources for their respective schools. The monitors were also given the trainer packs. The 63 trainers are currently conducting professional development sessions in their schools using the I-REBATT. They are retraining 581 teachers who are directly responsible for the academic performance of about 7,526 students. The next training session will have 169 participants from three local government areas.

THE IMPACT OF I-REBATT

The goal of Intergraid to complete phase 1 roll out of I-REBATT across all six FCT local government areas by July 2023. It will impact a total of 8,245,00 teachers and 175,732 students in just the secondary schools alone. This Train-the-Trainer model is highly sustainable and when deployed nationwide, will reach over 1,194,000 teachers. The biggest gainers of the I-REBATT program will be an estimated 30,703,391 students in public primary and secondary schools across Nigeria. They will benefit from highly improved teaching methods resulting in overall improvement in the quality of education.
